I love this quote because it’s such a real moment of character interaction. Yes, just about everybody in Spingfield hates Mr. Burns, but since he so rarely interacts with the common man, not everybody recognizes him right away. It’s much more genuine than recent episodes where every character knows every other character, so you have stupid scenes like Dr. Hibbert carpooling with Drederick Tatum, or Captain McCallister hanging out with Duffman. Here, they realize Barney and Mr. Burns have never spoken to each other before, and the dialogue reflects it.
I also love the innocence on both ends: that Barney thinks nothing of “the guy everyone hates” as an identifier, and Burns dismisses the notion that that might be him as utterly alien.
