“But if you’re one of those compulsive types who just has to bet, well, I don’t know… um… Denver.”
One of my all-time favorite episodes. Everything about it rings true, most of all the shopping-for-clothes subplot. Has there ever been a more “mom” comment than Marge saying, “anyone who beats you up for wearing a shirt isn’t your friend?” I say no.
What was that ZS episode where Lisa uses statistics to coach Bart’s baseball team?
I was trying to think about what made Lisa’s character so annoying in that episode versus this one.
One of the things that I noticed was that in ZS, Lisa represents the more aggressive left-wing activist – in your face, almost bullyish, who never gets her comeuppance. In older episodes, she was still intellectual and progressive, but also rather humble, meek and depressed, and that’s why people sympathized with her.
Even when she was more aggressive, and high-and-mighty, she would get pulled down to earth, being forced to realize that human goodness and intelligence cannot be defined only by one’s political stripes and report card grades – think about Lisa the Vegetarian, or even the one where Homer becomes Bart’s football coach, or the one where she does the Is-My-Brother-Smarter-Than-A-Hamster project.
Now the show has gone from being a witty observation of humanity to being an ethnocentric caricature of 21st century American culture. It’s boxed itself in, in a desperate attempt to be current and trendy.
