Happy Simpsons Day, everybody! As in previous years (this is the fifth since we started DHS), we’ll have a mix of fun Simpsons stuff here throughout the day. Feel free to leave any Simpsons related links in comments (self promotion most definitely welcome) or on Twitter. And speaking of Twitter, as part of a pre-New Year’s resolution, I’m going to try squandering more of the precious gift of life in front of the twit-box.
Since I have no gift for kissing up to celebrities or making pithy observations about trending topics, I thought I’d stick to what I know: quoting cartoon shows. But with so many episodes to choose from, how do you keep from over-repeating some and ignoring others? Easy, by quoting episodes on the day they were broadcast. Some dates have multiple episodes, others have none, but when you put them all on a list, it looks like a fun way to waste some time and have a few laughs. Behold, the December calendar:

You may have noticed that there are some Futurama episodes on there. That’s because Futurama, in addition to being hilarious, is one of the two shows that sprang directly from The Simpsons and is almost as quotable. (The Critic is the other, but it doesn’t have any episode anniversaries until January.) So today we’ll be tweeting quotes from “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire”, “Homer’s Triple Bypass”, and, yes, “Marge Be Not Proud”. Tomorrow we’ll do quotes from “Fear of Flying”, and then Thursday is our first Futurama episode, “Xmas Story”. If people like it, we’ll keep going. If not, well, it’s not like this site’s archive isn’t already littered with screwy ideas that didn’t work.

I never understood why people love Futurama. The humor they use there is somewhat different from the one in the Simpsons, many plots are so nonsensical they start at A and end at B absolutely unrelated, and only the last 4-5 episode long movies are still watchable to me. Futurama should be below South Park level, and even South Park does have a plot on several occasions, and the jokes aren’t just gross and disgusting (though some are). Futurama is like… Robot Chicken, but somewhat less adult.
Oh, and thanks in advance for “you’re just a weird prick” thought. The question is rhetorical, but you’re welcome.
Comedy, unlike drama, is quite subjective I find. I love (early) Futurama, myself, as well as large chunks of South Park. I don’t watch Robot Chicken so I can’t go through the whole comparison. And I think the whole ‘strange trajectory” was pretty prevalent in The Simpsons as well. “Bart Gets Hit By A Car” starts with … well… Bart getting hit by a car, and ends with a Homer and Marge marriage crisis. I guess you’re either on board for the journey or you’re not, but it’s not unique to Futurama. Maybe just more pronounced. I’d imagine that, to you, I’m the weird prick, while to many other people we’re BOTH weird pricks. I just think it’s great that we both have so many options available to us, and that we’ve both found shows we enjoy.
I guess that it would also depend on where you set your limits, as in what you want to watch and what you don’t. I’ve seen people lose interest in basically good shows that either got old fast, or featured really stupid (to my senses) kinds of humor. Futurama does feature humor, and sometimes it’s whimsically funny, but I never could get over the idea of the absence of any plot whatsoever in many episodes (storylines). In The Simpsons, I guess, I never even noticed when the plot elements were missing, because the basic story was still being told (of course, I’m not talking about the… later.. Simpsons). In Futurama it just angered me, and I know many would still watch a given show even if characters constantly traveling somewhere not making sense is still irrelevant to them.
That’s why I said that I could sound weird. Like you mention, it must be the matter of taste, because I often end up being told that every time I argue with someone about Futurama.
Happy Simpsons Day! This Chrismas I’m going to watch as much episodes in chronological order as I can (time and work constrains), from the sane part of the show (Seasons 1-7 minus MBNP and Season 8 minus a few episodes). Sometimes I can’t believe I’m going to make a marathon of a TV series older than myself.
lol I recentlly watched 26 episodes of the 1981 Spider-Man and the only thing that came to mind was Scooby Doo.
