“He’s a good boy now, and he’s getting better.  And sometimes, even the best sheep stray from the flock and need to be hugged extra hard.” – Marge Simpson
“That’s exactly the kind of crapola that’s lousing him up.” – Homer Simpson

This is another one of those series establishing moments from the first season that I love. Marge’s line sounds like it could have dropped right out of Full House or some other shit-tastic late ’80s sitcom, where it would have been played utterly straight. And Homer immediately dismisses it as sappy garbage. This show pulled no punches when it came to turning sitcom writing on its head.

Eric Stefani animated this scene, indicated by Homer’s wide head and the one eyebrow lower than the other.

This was back when The Simpsons had shitty animation, but sharp writing. Then it evened out, then the animation and the writing became shitty. Now the animation is sharp, but the writing is shitty.

See, I just explained in three sentences what Charlie “Give Up on Life”-Pants wasted 100+ pages on for a book hardly anyone is going to read (“Zombie Simpsons: How the Best Show Ever Became the Broadcasting Undead”), but hey, even bottom of the barrel to mediocre writers have dreams too.

lol you’d think if you were submitting only three sentences, you wouldn’t make such a huge fucking mistake

Charlie’s book is great – it’s well-written, and supports it claims. One doesn’t have to agree with everything, but it’s presents great arguments. 5 stars from me.

Now if you think you can do better, then go for it! Submit an article. Create your own blog.
      But please don’t insult people!

Actually, the animation was better then, too. People seem to conflate drawing quality for animation quality. But then again, I would argue that the drawings now really aren’t that great, either. Clean-looking drawing does not necessarily equate good drawing, especially when conveying personality and emotion of cartoon figures. As Charlie and friends have pointed out several times, there’s currently less range in the emotions and actions. And in terms of design, there’s a lot of inconsistency with the old in-universe characters and guest characters vs. newer characters.

Speaking of animation quality… I’ve only noticed this recently, and I don’t know if it’s just me, but from the middle of Season 6, I notice that the drawing becomes less “fluid” and more “rigid”, for lack of a better word. Less animated like the stuff in, say, “Homer Goes to College”: http://deadhomersociety.com/2010/08/02/animation-showcase-homer-goes-to%C2%A0college/

I keep wanting to think that at some point in the fifth season’s development, there was another one of those memos or lectures from either Brooks or Groening complaining about certain animation techniques being used, but I can’t recall for certain.
