That’s based on a real one used when the Irish emigrated to America.
And I think the part with “Look at me. I’m the prime minister of Ireland” was cut in the UK (most likely Ireland, though Great Britain probably edited too, and the part where the English pub gets blown up during the parade riot).

Pretty stupid really, as if anyone would be offended by that. Strangely though, “The Big Book of British Smiles” wasn’t cut from Last Exit to Springfield, despite making a joke at Britain’s expense, so why this line would be cut is beyond me.

Either it’s a rumor or it may have been cut after complaints came in about how it perpetuates the drunken Irish stereotype. I know the British pub explosion part was cut because of tensions between the Irish and the British and they don’t like to show violence like that.
And I’m surprised they let in “The Big Book of British Smiles” part. Most edits in the UK version of the show are for foul language, glamorizing guns, toning down sexual scenes, and anything that’s considered offensive or discriminatory…at least when it first came on. They probably loosened up since then, but you hear about episodes like “Weekend At Burnsies” and “The Cartridge Family” getting banned/rarely aired due to glamorizing drug use and guns respectively.

Actually, that sign is really just a myth (surprisingly). There weren’t any contemporaneous signs like this back then, despite the high anti-Irish sentiment in those days. http://tigger.uic.edu/~rjensen/no-irish.htm
There’s also a Cracked article with this factlet, but I can’t find it now.

St. Pat’s tomorrow, not today.

Charlie’s getting a headstart, since most people will be too busy drinking.

Either that, or Charlie decided to celebrate over the weekend and was stilling feeling the booze at the time of this post.
