According to the DVD commentary for this episode, Matt Groening hated that line because he felt misquoting a Bible verse was “taking things too far”. I thought this show back when it was good was supposed to skewer everything about modern life, including how people use religion for their own twisted benefit. Is it any wonder this show turned into the bland, yellow mess it is now. The writers are spineless pussies.
Maybe he just felt that this joke was too cheap of a shot and not that clever (though, I don’t know why this in particular would strike him as such). I don’t remember this from the commentary, so maybe what I had suggested is totally off-base.
