Where do figures of speech like “I tells ya” and “so I says” come from? They contradict the usual English grammar.
Popeye, mostly. And John Swartzwelder’s love of Popeye.
I miss John Swartzwelder. His episodes (most of them) were, to me, the funniest.
I guess you could say it was the “street vernacular” back at the turn of the 20th century, spoken by children and the less-educated. Think Little Rascals.
I don’t know that it contributed to the joke in any way or to the context of the situation, but it’s just there.
