When I was younger I never got this part of the episode. In the UK, cider always refers to the alcoholic apple drink, I didn’t undesrtand why homer wasn’t enjoying it getting drunk

I can see where that would be confusing. It’s not just that the cider is non-alcoholic, cider mills tend to be the kind of very family friendly places that Homer would just loathe.

“Twenty of the suckiest minutes of my life.” What it feels like watching Zombie Simpsons.

That’s how it felt about 10 years ago. Today, watching this show actually awards you with the “Sat through the whole thing and patiently waited for commercials” achievement.

    Note the John Swartzwelder in-joke.

The cider mill is called Mt. Swartzwelder

So it wasn’t a joke, it was just a reference to a writer?

See, generally when you have these things called “friends”, you do these things called “in jokes” that are jokes your circle of friends may get, eg. name-dropping them at random times. It really is a lot of fun, and I recommend trying it someday.

Never noticed the No. 00001 bit. That’s a nice, funny detail. That’s one of the great things about classic Simpsons, they always have little gags that you might not see the first time. Makes repeat viewings even more enjoyable.

I’ve never liked this episode overall, but details like that let you know that it’s still Season 8. I love the idea that Flanders and Flanders alone has purchased a season pass to the cider mill.

Why does Ned Flanders chuckle “heh-heh-heh” after he pays Homer? It always sounded like he was being sneaky when he did it.

I don’t think he’s being sneaky so much as he’s chuckling at how cute Homer is asleep. He’s not laughing at Homer, exactly, he’s laughing that Homer has failed, but that it’s okay. If there’s one thing uber-Christian Flanders understands, it’s forgiveness.

Definitely one of the weaker episodes of classic Simpsons, but it still had plenty of good jokes.
