Is the fourth pic supposed to be a parody of something? Looks so familiar; couldn’t find anything in the snpp capsule.
I’ve always thought it looked like a boxing kangaroo.
I like how the only way they could get away with Homer strangling a dog was to follow up with three examples of Santa’s Little Helper exacting revenge on him.
I wouldn’t say the only way, but with as many dog lovers as there are on the crew, they wouldn’t want anything to come off too strongly as actual canine abuse.
Although when Bart took SLH to obedience school, I thought it was fairly insidious how they showed an authority figure forcing a young boy to commit an act of actual animal cruelty (with the choke chain), especially since SLH would be sent away if he didn’t graduate, so Bart must’ve felt like he didn’t have any choice. Amidst all the jokes, that episode got pretty dark before it got a happy ending.
A lot of early episodes were like that. The writers brought it up on a couple of DVD commentaries for the first few seasons – everything’s dark and cynical for half an hour and then they turn it around in the last thirty seconds. “When Flanders Failed” is probably the most egregious example I can think of.
