“What would you say if I told you that Jebediah Springfield wasn’t as great as he’s cracked up to be? Look: Jebediah was really a vicious pirate named Hans Sprungfeld. His tongue was bitten off by a Turk in a grog house fight!” – Lisa Simpson

Can I just say I’ve never liked this episode, even though it has a few good moments and jokes? For one, it ruins yet another character, even if it is a minor one. Gone is the straight-laced square who had a love of rootmarm and hemp (for growing rope and blankets), and sure, you could say a lot of history whitewashes the more unsavory aspects of historical figures, but Jebidiah works so much better when he’s the heroic nerd they always portrayed him as.

Then you have Lisa, who ultimately decides the town is better off with an inspirational lie than the bitter truth. This is severely out of character for her. Gone is the little girl who wrote the essay “Cesspool on the Potomac”. Where would we have been if “Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington” had ended on such a deceitful and sappy note? So I tend to put this one in the same pile as “Hurricane Neddy” and “The Principal and the Pauper” (though that’s obviously the worst of the three). Has a few funny moments, but ultimately character-warping and unpleasant.
