“I like this kid! I can’t believe we were gonna shoot him.”

Between this line and all the actual guns pointed at Bart’s head, I’m amazed this all got past the censors at the time.

IMO, while perhaps not one of the funniest episodes of Season 3, this is one of the 2 greatest, most impressive episodes of said season when it comes to going beyond what the show was doing back then; the other episode being, of course, Stark Raving Dad (although it was a Season 2 leftover).

Season 3 loved to do “reversing positions” episodes, like Homer Alone (Marge temporally), When Flanders Failed (Flanders isn’t the Flanders we know), Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk (Burns is no longer Homer’s boss), Separate Vocations (Lisa becomes Bart-like), and “what if” episodes (Colonel Homer, Homer Defined), but Bart meeting and working for the Mafia (and the episode making sense) required extra work, and they did it.

Same. And I’ve always loved how they admit they were going to shoot a kid just for being there. I’ve heard the only way they could get away with Bart making drinks was because you couldn’t actually see him do it.
