So the censors were apparently strict on how they could show Bart handling or drinking alcohol, but here Kearney gets away with purchasing beer and in another episode, Jimbo steals two six-packs when the Sqishee machine is malfunctioning. I guess their reasoning was that the bullies were obviously demonstrating “bad” behavior?
Probably a combination of that plus in Bart’s case we actually see him drinking the booze (whereas it’s only implied with Jimbo and Kearney). Sounds silly, but TV censors are notoriously strict and stingy with things like that. You aren’t even allowed to show people actually drinking beer in beer commercials, only holding it, believe it or not. Weird stuff
Yeah, I didn’t know that (about the beer commercials) for the longest time, probably because I never really paid attention to them. It is rather silly when you think about it.
Then you have old Disney movies like Pinocchio where characters are drinking in a kids movie. Funny how censorship kind of goes back and forth over the generations.
…Bart is the main character/protagonist
Wow, you just notice that or something?
He’s probably citing that they don’t want alcohol portrayed in a positive light.
I mean, it was pretty clear in the context of the scene and episode that they weren’t glorifying it
