Ah the good old days, truly a great Halloween special. Even the one they showed on TV here earlier, from earlier this decade wasn’t that bad, certainly better than the regular episodes that were on at the time. I do think I’ll subject myself to the new lot, so I can see why everyone is giving it such a scatching write-up.
It was always easier to justify crazy nonsense in a Halloween episode, but even that eventually fell flat. I remember watching the one from Season 13 when it was first broadcast and just desperately trying to laugh and I couldn’t muster anything.

Probably due – at least in part – to the fact that the “regular” episodes of the show started peddling shit that was just as exaggerated and zany as what you’d get in a Halloween episode, which kinda defeated the point of having Halloween eps (i.e. doing crazy stuff you couldn’t get away with in the normal episodes). To give just one example, that horrible episode with the evil coven of horse jockeys was like a (particularly bad) “Treehouse of Horror” segment that somehow escaped and became an entire episode in its own right.
