Look how visually interesting this scene was. Look at how Homer’s emotion is clearly rendered.
Now they tout the sterile looking HD Simpsons as what they were aiming for all along. Oh well.
I never really looked at Barney’s apartment before, but you’re absolutely right. There’s a mousetrap right in front of a cartoon mouse hole (lower right), a TV with broken rabbit ears next to a bowling trophy (top shelf), and both a heating vent and one of those external air conditioners that’s cut into the wall but still needs to be plugged into a regular outlet (upper left). That’s the kind of thing you only see in the shittiest and most ancient of apartment buildings. The creme de la creme, though, is the floor. There are actual dirt trails on the rug from the couch to a) the front door, b) the kitchen/bathroom and c) the – ahem – entertainment center. It has the look and feel of a place some slobby bachelor would actually live, probably because some of the writers lived in places not unlike that. It’s funny, but it also has the ring of the real world to it.
