HALFBACK PASSES TO CENTER, BACK TO WING, BACK TO CENTER, CENTER HOLDS IT – HOLDS IT – HOLDS IT! Generic Non-American

Good luck to everyone but fuckin’ England.  (Love you in general, but not tomorrow.)

Is cool, sport bores me to tears anyway. To be honest, I didn’t expect you’d care that hard. Must be the effects of global something-or-other.

For geographic reasons I don’t have a club team that I follow, and the national team only plays meaningful games ever four years, so it’s a little goofy, I admit. But drawing England, especially as the opening match, has really increased the excitement level stateside. (That the game is on a Saturday afternoon doesn’t hurt either.) Back in 2002, it was hard to find people willing to get up at 2:30 in the morning to watch the games from Korea, and we got bounced so badly in 2006 that it was almost over before it began. This year it’s everywhere. Check out the image at the top of this page:

People don’t paint Landon Donovan as George Washington crossing the Delaware for Slovenia.

Not that anyone has probably noticed my absence of late, but I’m spending 16 days of drunken messiness in Durban watching my country play. Everything in the lead-up to the Germany game was amazing, until the game itself. Off to Rustenberg on a long coach ride with a heap of other Aussies tomorrow night where we can hopefully beat Ghana and get our campaign back on track. Had a really enjoyable time watching the US draw with England at a bar where the power went off 3 times, once when I was waiting to use the mens’ room! Saw Spain lose to Switzerland yesterday and Brazil-Portugal next week should be memorable. Good luck to the US, unless our paths somehow cross in the Round of 16 ;)
