“These unfortunate people here will be instantly killed.  This circle, which I am sad to say we are in, will experience a slower, considerably more painful death.” – Professor Frink

When this episode first aired, I was…shoot, 11 or 12, I guess. And it terrified me. I knew nothing about nuclear power, but was spurred into some quick research. That’s when I discovered a nuclear power plant resides in a neighbouring town, leaving Toronto smack in the zone of slower, more gradual death in the event of a meltdown. Many sleepless nights followed.

The show did love its morbid nuclear humor. I was always partial to the sign at the beginning of “Blood Feud” when it goes from “Relax Everything is Fine.” to “Minor Radiation Leak. Roll Up Windows.” to “Meltdown. Flee City.” and ends with “Core Explosion. Repent Sins.”

Same thing happened to me, Nadia. I watched this as a replay (it originally aired when I was 2) for the first time when I was either four or five. I never did anything then, but I remember rewatching it when I was 12 (2001), and I started to look on the computer about nuclear powers/meltdowns/etc. and then I found out that Three Mile Island is not but two counties away from where I live (Adams County, Pennsylvania), so I’d be in the area that would be instantly killed if there were ever another accident.

It’s a pretty chipper thought for a twelve-year-old whom just learned about nuclear power.
