No episode makes me laugh as hard as this one. For me, this, along with Homer The Heretic and Homer Loves Flanders, are the 3 funniest episodes ever made. And the one thing they all have in common is the Homer/Flanders dynamic. You have the car chase in “Homer The Heretic” where Flanders tries to get Homer to go back to church, then theirs the Terminator 2 spoof in “Homer Loves Flanders” where Homer runs after the Flanders family car, but the Homer/Flanders dynamic has never been funnier than it is in this episode.
There’s just so many hilarious moments. Homer washing his socks with the water canteen. Homer singing “sugar, sugar.” The flare gun. Oh, and, “here fishy fishy….we’re waiting”. This isn’t just the funniest Simpsons episode ever, I consider this the funniest episode of any tv show.

The dying seagull and the whole bit with the flare gun.

I love Ernest Borgnine’s sigh of resignation and bow of the head when he realises he doesn’t have his trusty pocketknife to fend off the bear.

I always liked how he expects the kids to know his role in From Here To Eternity. :D
And the Krusty burger map. lol. In the end, through sheer luck and his own stupidity, Homer’s trusty Krusty map saves the day.

This one has a lot of great callbacks like that. When Bart envisions how terrible Homer will be on the trip, Homer’s got the map folded on his head, and then Homer actually folds the map on his head. Ditto the whole pocketknife thing.
I miss those callbacks. The classic episodes have such great structure. What seems like a throw away joke turns out to be something vital to the story.
This is also one of those episodes that’s just so jam packed with memorable Homerisms such as, “Oooh, floor pie!”; “Well if it isnt the leader of the wiener patrol, boning up on his nerd lessons!”; and Homer’s hilarious back and forth with his own brain over how 20 dollars is better than a peanut because money can be exchanged for goods and services.
There are even jokes that can only be spotted through multiple viewings. For instance, if you look closely at Bart’s merit badges, you can see one of them is for “patch forgery”.

Holy crap, I never noticed “Patch Forgery” before. That’s awesome.

Great moments one and all, but I think my favourite Homer line from the episode is “Mmm, free goo!”

Dislike this one, truth to tell. Homer is just too big of an asshole; watching him insult everyone in sight and fuck up every opportunity just makes me cringe. The “On the Town” parody makes me laugh, though.

Hmm, foreshadowing?
It’s quotes like this that make me hate syndication cuts. I remember that on the Season 3 DVD packaging, someone wrote some vitriol against them.
What did it say?
