Perhaps a wiser man will write about the changing style of real-world reference as the years go on, but the Claus Von Bulow is classically historical with just a tad of Old Tymeness and obscurity, making it even more hilarious today as spouted from a 10 year old boy.
Zombie would make some lame reference to some reality show villian that will absolutely look dated before it even hit release.
SAY CHOWDER
NEVAH!
With references like Von Bulow, even if you don’t get the reference (I’ve only just looked up the name for the first time) the joke still works, and it hints at a larger world beyond what’s seen.
With obvious and lazy pop culture references, it’s effectively telling the viewer that they already know all that’s worth knowing in the world.
The first time I ever heard of Gore Vidal was through the Simpsons (“he’s kissed more boys than I ever will”) but it exposed me, ever so slightly, to something new.
Not only is ‘Zombie’ Simpsons bad storytelling, it’s making the world slightly worse.
The Gore Vidal reference prepared me for the Ali G interview where he confused Gore Vidal for Vidal Sassoon.
Hell, even the references to A Clockwork Orange, The Godfather and 2001 did a lot for me, not coming from a very ‘cultural’ household!
