A hilarious episode, especially its ending, but it bugs me slightly. Ned Flanders was always nebbishy and excessively pious but in the early seasons he was also portrayed as a guy who liked a beer, could mix a stiff drink and held barbecues. Now in this episode he eats cucumber slices and nonfat ice milk. And commits a felony (I’m pretty sure what he does counts as kidnapping.)
Sometimes with strict parents there’s a big difference between what they’ll do themselves and what they’ll let their kids do, so I always assumed that was the explanation for the cucumber slices, nonfat milk and extremely boring activities.
I think it’s just how the character of Flanders evolved from the original conception. Flanders originally WASN’T an overbearingly pious Christian. He was simply the neighbour who had everything better than Homer. Better house, better-behaved kids, prettier wife, better possessions, better attitude, etc. If Flanders was shown to be an avid churchgoer, it was only portrayed to contrast with Homer’s lax attitude to church and religion. So the early Flanders, yeah, wasn’t averse to alcohol, throwing barbecues, getting a bitchin’ RV, buying expensive sport shoes for himself, etc. But eventually the writers honed in on the Christian aspect, which was funny for a while, until they made it pretty much Flanders’ sole-defining characteristic.
He also dressed like a women back in his fraternity days.
Agreed, like much of season 7-9 there wasn’t any thing wrong with the humor per se as much as it set a bad example for future zombie episodes.
But what do you expect, his parents were freaky beatniks
