Is this technically a ZS episode?
Only if you believe season 11 was when the show fell off, and for a lot of people, it was, since it was the season that had the crazy episodes like “Saddlesore Galactica,” “Bart to the Future,” “Grift of the Magi,” “Kill the Alligator and Run,” and this one (though this is technically a season 10 episode because it has the AABF production code, and like most Simpsons episodes, whatever they don’t air in one season gets put early next season as a holdover. Even the classic seasons did this to such episodes as “You Only Move Twice,” “Cape Feare,” “Kamp Krusty,” and “Who Shot Mr. Burns, Part 2”), along with episodes like Maude Flanders dying and Apu and Manjula having octuplets.
Hi!
Long time admirer of this place.
First time commenting and I have to say this is the exact episode that made me stop watching The Simpsons. I remember coming to school (I was 17 or so) and telling people “Did… anyone watch the Simpsons last night? It…. was awful… I think I can’t watch it anymore.” and of course I was met with “It’s the Simpsons! It can’t be bad!”.
I had been kinda “meh” about the show for a bit before it, but this is when I really and truly felt the shift in the style of “humor”.
I haven’t watched it since it aired, but I remember being weirded out by zombie talking animals, as that was outrageously cartoony, whereas most things that happened on The Simpsons, save for Treehouse or the ocassional gag, obeyed physics. I remember Homer walking down a flight of stairs like FIVE times and being tired of it (rule of threes! C’mon!), and the moment I knew I could never watch it again was when a tractor fell on Homer and he goes “Son!” and Bart goes “PAW!” in some Southern drawl. Why would Bart talk like that?!
Even the “clever” stuff was insufferably average. The Zorro thing at the beginning and “GLOVE SLAP”?? Seriously?
I swore it off after and would only catch it in promos or by accident for the past god knows how many years confirming that it’s still stupid. My cousin and Simpsons-pal back then lasted a bit longer than me and gave up when he saw singing gnome jockeys. *SHIVER
It was apparent to me that the social satire, snark and heart of the show was completely gone at that point. I’ll stick with Seasons 1-8 (maybe some 9).
F*** you ToMacco.
