Those blank expressions on The Simpsons have always creeped me out.
Also, Charlie, I thought you hated this episode because of how much of a dry-run ZS episode it was. Me personally, I didn’t pick up on it, but I did find it depressing that Marge would just cut her own son off like that. However, the episode did have its moments despite this: the Bonestorm commercial, the quote you just posted, Milhouse ratting Bart out to his mom, and Homer buying nothing but eggnog because December is the only month he can have it before the government takes it back (it reminds me of how Timmy Turner’s dad on “The Fairly Oddparents” loves eggnog to the point of obsession).
I’ve said it a gagillion times, but I don’t understand the hate for this episode.
In fact I can totally understand why Marge felt the way she did – after defending, and defending and defending her boy, after all she did for him, he still couldn’t respect her enough to tell her the truth. she felt betrayed. her heart was finally pulled out and smashed.
i mean, it was a completely perfect and appropriate reaction – she just gave up.
i don’t have any kids of my own, but I really felt for Marge in this episode. I was pissed at Bart for being a jerkass.
DHS’ dislike for the episode isn’t due to Marge’s characterization, but because of the perceived Very Special Episode atmosphere that runs all the way through. I don’t hold the episode in the same contempt the site does but they do have a valid point.
As someone who does agree with DHS on the Very Special Atmosphere running through this episode, I’d like to point out that they also did a (IMO very good) Compare & Contrast with another episode where Bart similarly ruins a holiday for Marge: http://deadhomersociety.com/2011/12/22/compare-contrast-barts-remorse/

I’ll take a look at the C&C – maybe it’ll open my eyes to something!
Ever since I heard your opinions on the episode, I became born again. Thank you, my brothers, for opening my eyes.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
