Lisa chopping wood. I knew who I once had a crush on as a kid and I still don’t regret it.
i always thought Apu had a big butt
I always thought it was weird how he always wears his pants so high up.
Heh, I’ve thought the same thing. He could give Urkel a run for his money.
Well, why do you think his name’s Apu (a poo)?
Conspiracy.
Yeah, and most characters are yellow, the color of pee, so therefore a bodily fluid theme runs throughout the show (well, at least these days).
Plus, he IS brown, after all. Hehehe…
I always got a kick out of how Apu had a darker skin complexion than Dr. Hibbert and Lou The Cop.
Yeah, back in the day black simpson characters were pale brown like cookie dough, while apu was of a more redbone tint.
I always thought it was odd that most of the blatantly non-white characters were of more realistic colors. If I remember correctly, there some characters with purplish complexions in the Tracy Ullman shorts. And complexion of “Black Smithers” was sort of unusual, too, though I can sort see how some of the staff said just to imagine that he got some sun while on vacation when they were first asked about this.
‘Black’ Smithers was more like ‘Dark’ Smithers, i.e. having mulatto skin. He was never really depicted as being completely African-American.
As for the rest, I think it was Groening’s cartoonish fetish to draw a bunch of people with yellow skin. Plus you don’t have to underline Bart and Lisa’s hair =)
The hairline thing is true, but what do you guys think about the claim that they did it for transferring from Asian animation studio to american broadcasting? Urban legend deliberately put forth by disinfo-spreading PR guys or what?
I honestly think that almost deserves a tinfoil hat.
Really. I wonder how Reptilians and the Illuminati fit into this.
Utrons will conquer all! Run!!!
I’m more inclined to believe that it was the colorist Gyorgyi Peluce who worked under Klasky-Csupo who came up the yellow complexions. I remember reading some comment from her (which I think might be in Ortved’s book) about how she wished that race didn’t matter, so choosing yellow for the Simpsons was a way of bypassing the depiction of their race. (Though, I really have no clue if she actually realizes race is not merely based on complexion.) There was something I read that basically stated that she was the one responsible for Smithers ‘ colorization “error” as well, but I can’t remember where I read that and haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else.
I have to agree with you that “Black Smithers” is a misnomer, but I guess I used the term because it seems to be stuck in usage in the fandom at the moment (even though it does grate at the part of me that is overly particular). I remember reading a comment about this elsewhere regarding this jokingly stating something to the effect of, “But he was always a white nerd.”
I never saw him as a nerd. To me Smithers is a “daddy’s boy”, hence he grew up as a homosexual. His dad was too soft and too dedicated to Burns himself.
I’ve certainly found that the word “nerd” means different things to different people (and it’s even funnier when people get into arguments as to how nerds, geeks, and dorks vary), so I can see why you wouldn’t exactly agree with that comment. It still made me chuckle when I had read it.
Yeah, lol. I don’t make difference between these words. I just think he’s not nerd enough by my nerdometer. Frink and Database guy, on other hand, are perfect examples.
I would argue that Professor Frink and Database are more stereotyped and classic depictions of nerds, whereas there are a crap ton of other characters that would be considered nerds by many, but really don’t fit the stereotype to a T.
late to the party, but teenage Homer thought Smithers was a nerd.
thinking back to the scene from the episode where Lisa gets beat up by the bully where Homer was reminiscing about beating up nerds himself
Oh, I forgot about that. But, yeah, I’ve actually given way too much thought about how nerds are depicted on “The Simpsons,” and I actually had thought about this on and off before this conversation (and that’s pretty much because I’m a nerd myself, lol). If I can ever flesh out and sort my thoughts properly, perhaps I could write an article about it.
Eh, lots of Indian people have pretty dark skin. Hell, some groups in India have some of the darkest skin of any ethnic group.
I love how there’s no leaves in the yard at all.
Exactly! Behold the efficiency of Apu’s work ethic.
Fucking little shit switching names. I’ll catch you, shit…
I can’t tell if you’re right, joking or schizophrenic, Stanley.
Does it matter?
Lol
Actually, I haven’t made my rounds today up until now. Please tell me you aren’t cheating on me with another troll.
What troll? I’m a troll myself, bub. The mysteryman thing is a bluff.
Okay, good. You made me think there was some infidelity going on here. Tell me I can trust you.
Trust me on one thing: if I ever find your identity out, you’d wish you took Apu.
Trust me on one thing: you never will.
Hah, you amuse me, Al Gore Doll.
Three strikes and you’re out! Since I’m such a good sport, you can have one more guess.
Admit it.
Since you’re awful at guessing, would you like a hint?
Someone please tell me what’s going on here.
Stan must’ve cloned himself somehow.
