I think it’s kinda funny in a cheap way.
Seems like they just added it for an extra joke. The scene is fine without it. It’s not a problem, it’s just cheap as you said. Sounds like something what’s his name would say… uhh.. Peter Griffin, yeah him.

You couldn’t end the scene on the NASA guy’s line, there had to be a punchline. Sure it wasn’t the greatest gag the Simpson’s writers ever pulled off, but the scene needed the/a line to tie it off. And it’s a little bit sexy, since it wasn’t a topic spoken of much at the time (especially by men, and especially in an all male setting) and caps off Homer’s unique stupidity that the only kind of “judging between two people” scenario he could imagine was a Miss Universe/Miss America style beauty pageant, so a swimsuit competition was, for him, guaranteed. It looks a little lame now, and it doesn’t quite have the punch it should, but I don’t mind it. It’s certainly not out of character, so citing The Griffin might be going a little too far.
Yeah, but Homer could have said “You mean I lost 30 pounds for nothing?”, and it would have been non less funny.

Would have been no less funny, perhaps, but would it have been MORE funny? Not really, since so much of the training camp shows Homer trying, and failing, to make any results. Part of Barney’s transformation was losing weight, while part of Homer’s inability to compete with Barney was his NOT losing weight. Suddenly losing 30 pounds would have actually been beneficial for other areas of the training and, ok sure, then it’s funny cos he thinks the losing weight was ONLY for the swimsuit competition, but it’s not disseminated as quickly or easily to the viewing audience. And since he is directly shown to have not lost any weight, I think the shaving gag works better.
Gave that a thought myself… “You mean I lost ONE pound for nothing?” beats everything.
It’s kinda funny that the real astronauts have tiny heads compared to Homer and Barney.

This episode gets funny way before Homer goes into space, IMO. This is exactly the kind of comedic nonsense you’d expect for a sitcom where two nobodys end up piloting a spacecraft, and the carbon rod wins it all. Not some shitty premise of Homer suddenly becoming Duffman because he drinks beer and now he has to abstain from drinking beer (dddduuUUUUUHH!).
In short, fuck you, ZS. A thousand times.
