This is easily my favorite episode of season nine. Anyone else?
I have to admit, probably one of my lesser favourites. (i also don’t like Deep Space Homer). I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because it mixed fictional Springfield with real NYC? Maybe it’s because I didn’t like seeing Homer out of his element, being a helpless to the callousness of New Yorkers? Maybe because I love NYC while Homer hates it?
I did like the above joke as well as others, and I also liked the montage that described why Homer doesn’t like NYC. But overall, the episode left me empty and black-hearted and so, so angry!
This is, in all honesty, the first time I ever watched an episode of the Simpsons (I think I saw it first run, but here in Australia so about a million years late) and actually thought to myself that it wasn’t as funny as “the old ones”. It was a strange feeling, but one I can never shake. Just didn’t “zing” like it had in seasons previous.
Hate to be that guy (actually, I love it), but it only aired in Australia a few months later.
I honestly had/have no idea about when it was, I was merely assuming. But thanks for the info.
How much of a smartass do you think you fucking are?
I had the exact same reaction to this episode at the time, and remember it well. I hoped that it was just a one-off bad episode. Unfortunately, the episode marked the end of the classic Simpsons era.
I think “Lisa’s Sax” was waaay better. And “Lisa’s Sax” is both a weak flashback episode and a weak episode overall.
But to be honest, even I find Season 7 to be a bit weak. Pretty strong episodes, but I usually choose episodes from earlier seasons as my first choice when watching episodes in random order, and an overall slightly dissapointing season. So I find anything that came afterwards as either boring or unwatchable (save exceptions like “Bart After Dark” or “You Only Move Twice”). So maybe I’m not the right person to ask.
I think it’s one of the best episodes of S9 and I find it likeable, somewhat.
The whole Homer’s plot getting the car back is funny enough, but to me it leaves the impression Homer is a bit too wacky, the “proto-Jerkass Homer” definition by Victor Dang below nails exactly how I feel. And then the rest of the family subplot isn’t very funny nor interesting enough for me.
Yeah, the family subplot was somewhat weak. Although it did give us “Kickin’ It”, so there’s that.
My hometown is NYC so of course I like this episode.
It is a bit sad re-watching it since the Twin Towers are gone.
I can’t think of a better way to immortalize them than with the “Jerks From Tower One” bit. Even if they’re gone now, we’ll always have that.
If there’s anything that bothers me the most in this episode, it’s the proto-Jerkass Homer behavior here with him being too abrasive to everybody. But the NYC stuff is gold, and I even like the stuff before like Homer’s homemade car (I really wish we got to see him drive it… at least until it falls apart in the driveway after he leaves the garage). I think I complained about Barney’s behavior before, too, but that’s for another post (and is small beans compared to that godawful Season 11 episode).
And who doesn’t love that (expensively) animated shot of the bridge at the end? Over a decade on and that’s still pretty impressive.
Also, I think I speak for everyone when I say this episode is infinitely superior to the later Season 24 episode where they return to New York. I notice there’s no “Behind Us Forever” for that one, but that’s probably for the best…
I think there are episodes when Homer can be allowed to be more abrasive and asshole than usual, like “When Flanders Failed” and “Lisa on Ice”. There were several instances in the show when certain elements of a character can be exaggerated when the story and context demands it.
The difference is that, while in “When Flanders Failed” Homer has having just childish dreams and tried to fix everything once reality hit him, and Homer was being just the competitive parent who exploits his children’s skills on “Lisa on Ice”, here on “City of NY” we need to watch some boring filler crap such the part where Homer needs to go to the bathroom. I still find Homer’s negative views about New York to be somewhat plausible, but the episode overcentralized and exaggerated it too much…
I don’t really like the setup: the three other drunken douchebags treat sober Barney like shit the whole time he’s driving them home. I mean, like with everything else, Family Guy has done it even worse, but that’s not the point. Talking about Jerkass Homer, well, they’re all acting like jerkasses in that first scene.
The rest of the episode is just filled with racial stereotypes that aren’t very funny (like that ‘Khlav Kalash’ joke) and ends on a note where Homer gets garbage on his face while driving, like this was his phobia the whole time or something.
I so much fucking hate Family Guy that I kinda like this ep, except back in 1997 it mustn’t have been as funny.
