Much has been said about the subpar quality of the digital animation here, but man, what a beautiful shot. Just imagine what the rest of Season 7 might’ve looked like had they chosen to switch completely and used the lessons they learned here for the rest of the episodes.
As most of you may know, they didn’t, and the next dip into digital would be in Season 12, long after the sun set on the show. They’d switch in full with the S14 production run, but already fully in paint-by-numbers mode by that time, and this was reflected in the animation quality (which as you might’ve guessed, was bad, but not as bad as the crappy scripts it was in service to).
The only advantage to digital coloring I see here would be in executing how the pipe Wolfcastle is tied to slowly turns green. Other than that, I cannot note any discernible beauty to the digital coloring. The effects of the acid wave splash could be rendered just as convincingly in standard ink and paint on celluloid.
Been waiting for this quote.
There are some misconceptions that, no matter how often they’re corrected, just refuse to die. That “Frankenstein” was the name of the monster. That Columbus thought the Earth was flat.
That Ranier Wolfcastle said, “The goggles, they do nothing!”
So that line’s like the “Play it again, Sam” or “Luke, I am your father” of The Simpsons?
Anyway… It’s the 20th anniversary of the Scout Master? (Quite possibly my favourite one-scene character of the entire show.)
“Luke, I am your father” is the “Luke, I am your father” of The Simpsons.
Good call.
– Up and Atom!
– Up and AT THEM!
I can’t believe this one’s never been a QotD before now, but this is the perfect occasion to save it for.
Agreed. I can’t think of anything else in this episode that comes close to being as iconic/well-known as this.
First you get the sugar
Then you get the power
Then you get the women
i know it’s not as well-known, but it’s my favourite
I use this line allot at work, ever since they got overly paranoid about personal protective equipment. They want you to wear acid proof goggles and gloves when pouring rubbing alcohol.
