Why do they always show Marge with Lisa’s white pearls in the early episodes? Is it an animation error or has Lisa been wearing her mom’s jewelry for years?

    huh – never noticed that.
in this particular screen cap, Marge is actually wearing a different outfit altogether. Log sleeved, high-collared green dress with green earrings.

i wonder if the animators/directors wanted to say something about Marge and green dresses – also in the episode where they go to Japan (i think) where they go to the 33 cent store and marge sees all the green dresses. but i guess by then, that joke was more of a 4th wall/self-referential humour thing.

The long-sleeved, high collared dress Marge wears in older episodes is often the one she wears when the family goes to church.

And yes, you are right — the 33 cent store dress gag was on “30 Minutes Over Tokyo” (the Simpsons go to Japan episode, which, IMO, felt like it could have been a good final episode. I don’t agree with the people who think “Behind the Laughter” is the last one just because it broke the 4th wall by showing the characters as animated actors and revealed where Springfield was. That’s not a final episode — it’s a stupid gimmick episode that should not have been made. Good episodes of The Simpsons that should have/could have been series finales are episodes like “Summer of 4’2””, the Who Shot Mr. Burns two-parter, the Simpsons 138th episode spectacular [if only to make Troy McClure’s line about the show staying on until it becomes unprofitable ironic instead of a sad reality], the episode where Homer becomes sanitation commissioner and floods the town with trash, making everyone move away [it’s a Simpsons-esque spin on those cliched series finale episodes where the characters all move away for one reason or another], Krusty Gets Kanceled [it had that “It’s over” feeling to it], the Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show, Homer’s Enemy, or, at the very least, that season 17 episode where Homer drives Bart to a behavior modification camp and Marge gets busted on selling prescription meds at a garage sale [it even ended on a note that feels like the writers just gave up and don’t want to do this anymore, having Lisa look for work after telling Maggie that she knew the day would come when it would be the two of them fending for themselves]).

      Okay, end rant.

Tl;dr: Behind the Laughter is a sucky choice for a Simpsons series finale (or point where people should have stopped watching). My personal choices include “30 Minutes Over Tokyo,” “Summer of 4’2””, “Who Shot Mr. Burns (parts one and two; that could have been The Simpsons Movie, only scaled back and made as a TV movie), The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular, Trash of the Titans, Krusty Gets Kanceled, The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show, Homer’s Enemy, or We’re On the Road to D’Ohwhere.

I actually think the Sherry Bobbins episode could have made a decent finale. I don’t know why, probably because of the “Happy Just The Way We Are” song.

Okay, obviously, please don’t name one-digit Season episodes for “finales”. The Simpsons (the original Simpsons) ran for 11 Seasons. Period. You can’t take that away and say that you’d wish some 6-7 Season ep was its finale. The last episode of Season 11 was behind the laughter. Whoever was the show’s director back then was packing things up. The cast was due to their last signed contract at the time. Everything indicates that the show was to be pulled the plug on. Yet that asshole Jean came up and the shitfeast began.
While you could argue that there are many great episodes that would’ve made decent series finale, I think that at Season 11 stage “Behind the Laughter” was indeed the best choice.

I didn’t mean end right then and there, I meant like if they would have moved the ep to the end or whatever.

This is that kind of humor you don’t see pretty much anywhere nowadays: the old times of straightforward education when every teacher secretly wanted to take revenge on the parents of the brat who made his or her life miserable. The spiteful Krabappel is perfect for that role!
