      The latter-day episodes pretty much do that all the time. And it is kind of odd that this and Marge and the Monorail are considered the best episodes ever, when they’re packed with all the stuff that people hate about the current episodes (celebrity appearances [though, in fairness, Phil Hartman’s character actually had a point in the story and Leonard Nimoy was actually funny in this. I’m talking about the unnecessary appearance of Dr. Joyce Brothers, who was a replacement for O.J. Simpson], Homer being cartoonishly stupid [especially in “Last Exit of Springfield” or whatever that dental plan strike episode is called], Homer getting a non-nuclear plant job that last for one episode, and jokes that have no bearing on the plot and/or are used ad nauseum to eat clock [“Dental plan!”/”Lisa needs braces”, anyone]). I guess if these are written well or used sparingly, they’re considered good, but I just don’t get it.
