I always liked how the classic Otto and Skinner were conversing like due characters, and you could never tell that both are voiced by the same actor. Much like Smithers and Burns.

Some pretty dark stuff lurking in the first season.

Was the funeral part cut in syndication (network TV, not cable)? ‘Cuz I don’t remember it.

And another thing: Why would Skinner actually care about attending Bart’s funeral, given all the crap he pulled? I’ll chalk this up as “It’s all a dream, and, therefore, not real.” Also: did Springfield Elementary back in season one have a real school nurse and not just Lunchlady Doris doing two jobs so she can earn two paychecks and because the school budget was once again cut.

indeed it was a dream sequence – i think Bart was dreading having to fight Nelson and imagined that this is what the outcome would have been.

I’m sure Skinner would still attend out of respect to the family. And yes, there was actually a school nurse we saw once in a while. Pretty sure she’s the one Bart saw when faking all the illnesses to get out of his tests until he literally became the Boy Who Cried Wolf.

We also saw her briefly in Bart Gets an F, picking up tongue depressors she’d dropped on the floor and putting them back in the jar. Another great detail alluding to the fact that none of the faculty of Springfield Elementary gives a shit about their job.

That’s one of those little details that adds depth and characterization. Another example is Homer’s daydreaming scene in “Cape Feare”, where he imagines himself as a professional football player, and succesfully performs a goal, and yet his team loses by a huge margin.
