I never understood this joke/visual gag….does anyone here get it?
A 30-year-old puppy.
Supposedly the worst joke ever made on the Simpsons (according to Oakley & Weinstein). I can think of far worse than this, but I never got why this one in particular was singled out.
Was it because there’s no rhyme or reason to this joke? It didn’t really make any sense to me then, and it still doesn’t now. It doesn’t help that it’s the act-break closer as well, highlighting it even more.
I think it’s not so strong because of Homer’s line telegraphing it so much – there’s no reason to say that unless as a lead-up to a laugh line. Worked on me when I first watched it, to be honest, but they’re shown in 2 parts here in the UK so it wasn’t on an ad break. Maybe that helped.
Oakley and Weinstein were always really harsh on themselves, trying to bang out the best show they possibly could, no matter what it took. So when they couldn’t hit the best joke, it really got under their skin. It’s actually pretty fascinating to listen to the commentary for this one and see just how much they and Ken Keeler criticize their own writing, still not sure ten years later if they made the right choices. As they say, an artist is his own worst critic.
