Another “I Can’t Believe You’ve Never Quoted it Before”. These should get their own category.
I also find it hard to believe how many people hate(d) this episode, at least when it first came out. These days, I bet regular ZS watchers wouldn’t so much as blink an eye at the Simpsons getting an exotic pet.
I don’t hate it but I definitely count it as one of the weakest golden age episodes.
That would be a fun feature for the site actually. Let’s spread the negativity around a little!

How’s it keep up with the news like that?
Yeah. I don’t get why people hated this episode. Guess they’re used to the more dramatic and down-to-earth episodes or they were tragically born without a suspension of disbelief. At least this episode showed the downside of a working-class suburban family keeping an exotic pet like that (high bills, the pet causing a nuisance, accusations of animal cruelty from Lisa, the pet growing to be a jerk from it). The ZS episodes wouldn’t do that.
Was this Cletus’s first appearance?

Yeah, but he wasn’t named Cletus until the season seven episode where the kids get put in foster care after Child Welfare accuses Homer and Marge of being bad parents because Bart got lice, Lisa’s prescription shoes got stolen, Grampa let the house go to pot, Maggie has Lisa’s “I’m A Stupid Baby” sign taped to her back, and Marge and Homer came back a little too relaxed from the spa (almost as if they were on drugs).
(cont’d): And he wasn’t called “Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel” until that season seven episode where it shows a day in the life of most Springfieldianites after Bart and Milhouse wonder if anything interesting happens to the people of Springfield (“22 Short Films About Springfield”, the one that was said to be a pilot for a Simpsons spin-off that focused on everyone else in town except for The Simpsons [which would have been cool…or at least a decent way to keep the show fresh. Too bad it’s too late for that]).
Some folk’ll never lose a toe but then again some folk’ll, like Cletus the slack-jawed yokel.
