It’s kind of cute in a way.

Now why couldn’t they have used that scene that finally gets Krusty’s show taken off the air rather than that Eastern European cartoon?

The problem is that the pre-digital episodes were telecined, then mastered on analog video, and for the DVDs of the first nine seasons they used analog tape copies as their source. Which is why they look terrible today, full of artifacts like rainbowing. I’m not even sure the original film elements are still available and in good condition, maybe they discarded them because eh, who cares about a cheap cartoon.

That’s sad. I was watching a couple of old ones on the FXX streaming thing a couple weeks ago, and they didn’t look any better than the DVDs.

All I have read and know about the digital versions like the ones broadcasted on FXX is that they’re the same versions as the DVDs, but upscaled with Superresolution techniques by the Lowry company (the same company involved in the restoration of the Apollo XI moon landing videos and the awful 2004 masters of the Star Wars OT ), with the colors tinkered and made slightly more “digital” looking.

If the film elements were available, they could just scan them like any anime company would do with their old properties (the pre-HD digital episodes would need upscaling though because they have fixed resolution). But this is FOX. They don’t care, and the people behind The Simpsons doesn’t care that much either.

There’s some very funny David Silverman-y poses in this little piece of animation. He’s always been a fan of that confused expression with one lowered eyebrow.

“that confused expression with one lowered eyebrow.”

Now that you mention it, yeah, you see that a lot. Good catch.

Every time I think I’m such a hardcore fan, you guys who recognize the different animators’ styles prove I still have a long way to go.

Silverman’s scenes are always the easiest to identify – lots of extreme poses and expressions and full-bodied acting, and he does a lot of Homer scenes. Some of his best work includes Homer’s split-screen heart attack in Homer’s Triple Bypass, “They’re DOGS….and they’re PLAYING POKER!” in Treehouse of Horror IV, Homer’s “city fathers” speech in Lisa’s Rival, and pretty much the entire chili pepper hallucination from El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer.
