Pre-jerkass homer right here.
Yeah, definitely pre-Jerkass Homer, because he gets his comeuppance immediately (unlike Zombie/Jerkass Homer, who gets away with everything) and the pain is brief and funny, instead of dragged out and unpleasant.
I just find the way he gets hit so damn funny.
Season 5 Homer was great because it was just a regular guy in extraordinary situations. Homer was not portrayed as competent or charismatic at all, like in Rosebud where Homer is a horrifically bad comedian. When Burns sees him earlier in the episode he misconstrued what he was seeing, Homer was the butt of the joke, they were laughing at him and not with him. This gif perfectly sums up Homer’s arrogance and immediately being proven wrong which helped make him a great character and not the present day trainwreck of a character.
