The show always made these jokes back then because it was shamelessly a merchandising tool.
That’s what bartmania was all about.
You could even argue there was more merchandising back then than there is now. Matt Groening would go on talk shows just to plug merchandise lol.
I stand corrected. Maybe it’s because the only merchandise I really remember is the Bart dolls, comic, and arcade game.
