My favourite episode :)
You know, it’s one of the best ever, isn’t it? My personal favs are “Duffless”, “Last Exit”, “Cartridge Family”, and “Bart Sells His Soul”, but this is ALWAYS the episode I show to people who I’m trying to get into the Simpsons (mainly people who only know of them in their zombie incarnation)…
I don’t think it gets any better than Seasons 3-4.
Card table for sale, top badly damaged, leg missing, otherwise fine. One dollar or best offer.
Back when Lisa wasn’t a Buddhist and actually served as an interesting religious counterpoint to Homer’s hedonism.
I was just going to make this same comment. Little liberal Lisa wouldn’t give two shits today about Homer skipping church. She’d consider it a worthy strike against organized religion. Another example of how the show lost its moral center, and shifted the family from average upper-lower-middle class people to rich southern Californians. And yes, I’m using a straw man as an example, but I don’t think I’m wrong here.
Where can we get these straw mans?
Maybe there’s some in this truck!
Great post. Y’know, speaking of radical character changes, I’m actually sorta surprised they haven’t made Bart a scientologist now since Nancy Cartwright is one (she gave $10,000,000 a few years ago to them, not to mention she vetoed a scientology-related joke on the show apparently).
I don’t mind Lisa as a buddhist, or a vegetarian, or whatever… it’s actually kinda surprising that she’s one of the few characters with actual development (I was about to say “Growth” but that’s not the right word) over the years. It’s weird when characters have continuity since only about 5 characters have had any kind of meaningful and permanent changes. Still, it’s not like it improved the episodes… it just kinda makes her REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING at this point…
I don’t mind that Lisa’s become a liberal activist. I mean, that’s a common character template for a lot of shows (Look up “Soapbox Sadie” on TV Tropes), but it’s one that can be done well. What I hate is how whiny Lisa has become in the process. “Moaning Lisa” would have been damn near unwatchable if it had today’s Lisa in it.
I know it’s happened plenty of times in history, and this isn’t a criticism… but does anyone else think it’s kinda odd that an episode that features snow so prominently, ends with a house fire? Of course it can happen and will happen, it’s just kinda an odd contrast from the snowy, wintery beginning, to a firery end…
