Until recently, I had actually seen this episode one time. So when I got to see it again, I was rather excited. That being said, I was disappointed to see Mr. Burns so “neutralized” (as one commenter nicely put it in the Skinner thread earlier this week).
The old Burns would have outwitted Castro, or at the very least, promised and delivered on stone-cold revenge. In this episode, he meekly accepts his loss and allows himself to be set adrift on a life raft.
I mean, the man was able to manhandle the Loch-Ness monster!
Although I did like this back and forth:
Smithers: Sir, that’s Cuba…
Burns: Cuba, eh? Take ‘er down, Smithers
Smithers: Uh, you’re flying the plane, sir
Burns: Excellent!
The whole FBI subplot is composed of tongue-in-cheek humour references that are actually nothing but filler. Like when Homer puts on a wire and goes to the Power Plant… fuck, it’s just too obvious that he’s wearing one! Or the whole Fidel Castro thing.
They’re not like ZS “jokes” because these are still laughable, yet these tend to be… something else.
The something else is their being on the way to ZS-land.
By the way, I have a feeling that it is Homer’s now infamous “loud whisper” in this episode–“I got a little tax problem!”–that sunk in the brain of ZS writers like a parasite. It’s humorous enough in this episode, but I swear it seem like every fifth line f ZS Homer is a completely unfunny loud whisper. More evidence of the writers recycling the show (whether they can help it or not), but it just doesn’t work.
best use of the loud whisper (in this fan’s humble opinion) was in Cape Feare:
[the Simpsons are in an office with two FBI men letting them know about going to the federal witness protection program]
FBI Man #1: Tell you what, Mr. Simpson, from now on your name is Homer Thompson,at Terror Lake.Let’s just practice a bit, hmmmm? So when I say hello Mr. Thompson, you say hi.
Homer: Check!
FBI Man #1: Hello, Mr. Thompson.
[Homer stares blankly]
FBI Man #1: [pause]
FBI Man #1: Now, remember, your name is Homer Thompson.
Homer: Gotcha!
FBI Man #1: Hello, Mr. Thompson.
[Homer stares blankly]
…
[hours pass by]
FBI Man #1: Now when I say “Hello Mr. Thompson” and press down on your foot, you smile and nod.
Homer: No problem.
[stepping hard on Homer’s foot]
FBI Man #1: Hello, Mr. Thompson.
Homer: [whispering to the FBI man next to him] I think he’s talking to you.
If this were in ZS we would’ve seen Homer and two FBI guys texting all that to each other, and Homer still managing to screw it up with emoticons.
There’s soda on the plane!
