I’m a little late on this, so I’ll just say that this is one of those episodes that grew on me the more I watched it. Initially I couldn’t buy the premise, it just felt so silly to me. No way could the same man who kidnapped Tom Jones or rigged a softball game lose track of all his finances, I thought. So much so that none of the yes-man jokes landed with me, and even though I found it funny when Burns calls them spineless yes-man and they all agree, I didn’t really think it was a good payoff.
But, after rewatching it again a few times, I gotta say that this ranks near the top of 8 for me. There are definitely a few jokes that could’ve been done better or dropped, notably Burns’ dumb saying of the obvious like “I’m shopping on the bus!” or maybe even Lisa’s running through the streets, but there’s a lot to like outside of that, like Count Chocola, the dairy cases, and catsup. And though the premise of “Burns losing all his money” may seem silly at first, they still manage to pull it off and make it believable.
And with all that said, even when I was initially down on this, I always felt this was an episode that ends better than it begins (like with “Last Temptation of Krust”), which is always a good thing in my book.
