I forget which DVD commentary it was, but Matt Groening says this is his least favorite kind of Simpsons joke, where Homer gets randomly distracted by animals and then blissfully runs away from whatever he’s doing. He never liked it when Homer got pushed into too-dumb-to-live territory.
Man, I wish he was still in the writers’ room. He’s described himself as “the schoolmarm” who kept the writers grounded and focused in the classic era, and there hasn’t been anyone like that on the show for a long time.
You mean the same Groening who wanted Marge to be a humanoid rabbit who hides her ears with her hair? Sam Simon dropped that idea.
Touché.
My parents had to wrestle a ham from my dog. Classic Simpsons was so relatable.
