Martin Prince was such a great character in the early episodes and this is one of his best episodes. Like with most of the kid characters they overemphasised the pathetic angle later on and ignored the fact he was great as this snide, completely out of touch with his classroom peers, over achieving minor antagonist/ironic parallel to Bart.
