  1. Why do they do this? My friend was in a car accident and they had to cut off his legs to get him out. Is there seriously no way to pull apart whatever machinery traps these people in? I thought this scene was a joke when I was younger (the guy actually resorting to cutting off Homer’s arms) only to find out this actually happens. Ugh.

    1. I don’t know the specifics of your friend’s situation (obviously) but usually it’s done as a last resort if the person is either a) in immediate danger from the other factors (car’s about explode, building collapse, raging fire, etc) or b) they’ve sustain other life threatening injuries and need immediate medical attention. Waiting to clear away a pinning structure (such as a car) could mean loss of life, not just loss of a limb.
