Every X-Mas until this last one, me and my ex-girlfriend of many years — who was a huge simpsons fan — would exchange gifts, and after opening up her stuff to me, I’d always ask, “Thanks for the gifts, but….wheres’ my spy camera?!”

The exchange between Bart and the fe-mail carrier that follows is one of the funniest exchanges in the first season, and as good as anything in the classic era if you ask me. The delivery by both of them is perfect, along with the way they time “WHERE’S MY SPY CAMERA?” at the end, topped off with Bart immediately giving a congenial “Hey thanks lady!” The first season may not have been lighter on jokes, but they came up with some brilliant ones.

I like how they talk over each other in places — “Every day for the last six months,” by the femail woman — and then join in unison for the repetition of “where’s my spy camera?” Talking over each other is very realistic but not something you hear in many cartoons, or even many live action shows, since it can lead to a chaotic mess for anyone at home trying to listen. Here, it was used brilliantly, and the direction — with the camera getting closer as the exchange becomes more heated/tense — is great.
