Homer vs Patty & Selma15

“Uh, I need another extension on my mortgage payments.” – Homer Simpson
“I understand that, Mr. Simpson, but according to our computer, your credit history is not good.  It says here that you’ve been pre-declined for every major credit card.  It also says that you once grabbed a dog by the hind legs and pushed him around like a vacuum cleaner.” – Bank of Springfield Guy
“That was in the third grade!” – Homer Simpson
“Yeah, well, it all goes on your permanent record.” – Bank of Springfield Guy

I’m conflicted about this episode. It does have some memorable lines, but it’s just so boring. And I’m mad that when FOX ran promos for this, they focused on the Bart takes ballet with help from the Russian teacher guest voiced by Susan Sarandon and I think a “Billy Elliott” plot where Bart wants to dance, but Homer (or Marge) objects because it will make Bart the target of bullies/ridicule would have made a great classic-era plot.

It’s a surprisingly down to earth episode amid all the craziness of Season 6. But I can’t knock an episode that has “Oh, sure, Marge. I’ll get along with them. Then, I will hug some snakes! Yes, I will hug and kiss some poisonous snakes! …Now that’s sarcasm.”

Yeah, and the part where Homer tells Mel Brooks that Young Frankenstein (a parody of horror movies) scared the hell out of him.

And I think I should have clarified that it bored me when I first watched it. These days, I do like it, but if I were listing my favorite Simpsons episodes, this wouldn’t be on there (or if it were on there, it’d be in the “honorable mentions” [read: the list of episodes that weren’t good enough for the top ten/twenty/thirty list] list)

It’s been such a long time since I’ve seen this episode, but for the longest time, it was one of those episodes I had nearly forgotten about. I actually had forgotten that the Bart practicing ballet was the B-plot, and thought that it was part of another episode. I was pretty un-wowed by this episode when I first saw it, but I might feel differently about it when I see it again.
