I’ll do fine as long as I remember what Joe Namath told me.
“Honey, it was just vapor lock… vapor lock… vapor lock”
I’m screwed.
I feel like this was one of the last really good “as himself” guest star appearances. They were always best when the celebrity in question was making fun of themselves (Adam West in “Mr. Plow” will always be my all-time favorite in this vein). It wasn’t long after this that they had people like Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger or Mel Gibson on just so they could kiss their asses for 30 minutes.
Adam West sold his posterior to Seth MacFarlane some years later, we all thank him for that.
Wasn’t the Joe Namath appearance in this episode a send-up of those guest appearances on live-action sitcoms where a sports star helps the kid out (I believe the Brady Bunch did that)? ‘Cuz I know a lot of people say that appearance was gratuitous just like the ones that would come later (though that Mel Gibson one on “Beyond Thunderdome” is funnier now, considering “Passion of the Christ” and how Mel descended into anti-Semitic and sexist insanity), but if you know anything about television shows before The Simpsons (attention, millenials and people my age: yeah, I know, it’s scary, but there was a time where that show didn’t exist and people were happier for it), you know that this was a thing.
