I wonder who first started the trend of using red polka dot (or heart patterned) boxer shorts in cartoon comedy. It turned into such a huge cliche.
I actually own heart shaped boxer shorts. Not sure if they cliched themselves into reality, or they just always existed and werent actually a cliche.
Id wager they started with elmer fudd though.
Yeah, it feels like it was something that started off in the days of silent film comedy (or vaudeville, if you want to go farther than that), then found its way into animated and live action comedy. There are variations of this. Instead of heart or polka-dot boxers, it’s usually a guy wearing a scandalously revealing thong (particularly one with an elephant trunk front. I remember that from the Comedy Central show, “Drawn Together”) or women’s underwear.
