I never liked this joke, as it puts Marge’s response way too far out of character for the purpose of a weak pun. Why would she mention Balzac? She’s probably never even heard of him.
Didn’t she studied art?
But Balzac was a writer…
He lived with Alan Funt
His landlord didn’t like him
But that’s ‘cuz she’s a
Cunt-taminated water
Can really make you sick
Your bladder gets infected
And blood comes out your
Dick-tate what I’m saying
‘Cuz it will bring you luck
And if you all don’t like it
I don’t give a flying fuck!
I suspect Marge only studied Thomas Kincade’s works, and thought Van Gogh was pronounced like GOG.com.
Aren’t you all guys like the same person under different nicknames on DHS?
1) Balzac liked women and was renown as a “casanova” of his epoch. Therefore the expression “woman of Balzac’s age” to refer to good-looking mid-agers.
2) Honoré de ballsack, anyone?
Thanks to this episode, I can’t read the word Balzac without hearing Marge’s voice in my head.
The follow up to this gag is an example of something that became all too prominent in Al Jean’s solo episodes later on – padding the scene by over explaining the joke. We know Balzac is someone who lived without air conditioning; we don’t need Marge to say “But Balzac is the name!”
It crops up a few more times in these Jean and Reiss episodes from Seasons 8 and 9. Like in “Simpsoncalafragilistic…”, Homer’s “Didn’t he, Lisa? Didn’t he?” doesn’t really need to be capped with “Hey, wait a minute, he didn’t!”
Yeah, but on “Simpsoncalafragilistic…”, it was funny because Bart basically tricked Homer into giving him a dollar over nothing.
