And here we go again with the Grimes episode… How many, oh how many discussions did I participate in, on the World Wide Web’s great open, that Grimes wasn’t a douchebag. Almost 20 years later, it still goes on. I know of shows that generated plethora of fan fiction, fan art, and everything fan-made. I know of shows that make you cry every time you watch them, no matter how many times you’ve already seen it. But The Simpsons, I think it’s the only show of the 90s to have created such debates on whether to love or to hate side characters, that these debates still freely go on.
I’m sure someone will say “Grimes got what he deserved”… And there we’ll go again…

It’s a complex character, alright. He has all the right to hate homer and the springfieldnites even though it wasn’t homer’s fault or anything. His death was very dark and shocking for the series when they wanted to experiment and push boundaires while being relevant.

I enjoy this episode for what it was: an experiment. If you take a hard-working humorless guy from the real world and drop him into the universe of The Simpsons, he has no choice but to self-destruct, and I think that’s really interesting. Dark? Yes, but still funny.

If this and “The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase” had aired back-to-back as the series finale, I think it would have been the finest conclusion to a television series ever – a full and fascinating deconstruction of the character of Homer and the show’s universe at large, followed by a hilariously insane parody of TV shows that stay on the air too long. It would have been perfect.

I love dark humour, which is probably why the Frank Grimes episode appealed to me.

    “Well, I don’t need safety gloves, because I’M Homer Simp—-” *KA-JOLT! KA-JOLT!*

“Frank Grimes, or, ‘Grimey,’ as he LIKED to be called…”

Yeah man, if I wrote for The Simpsons, I’d be coming up with all kinds of Frank Grimes-ish jokes.

Stan, I have no clue where you hang out, but I’ve never even heard of anyone arguing the merits of the Frank Grimes character. What’s to get? He was a hardworking sonofagun with all the right qualifications, and Homer was his idiotic foil who came out on top regardless.

It’s not about love or hate – it’s about Grimes being a disposable character.

    …so they disposed of him.

    DURRR!
