Quote of the Day

“C’mon Jimmy, let’s take a peek at the killing floor.  Don’t let the name throw you, Jimmy, it’s not really a floor.  It’s more of a steel grating that allows material to sluice through so it can be collected and exported.” – Troy McClure

Party at Matt’s House!

According to the Hindustan Times Matt Groening is throwing a party: The creator of the legendary show, Matt Groening is reportedly planning a huge birthday party at Fox studios in Hollywood in 11 days’ time, plus what he describes as a string of on-screen surprises for fans. If they invite me I’ll bring a whole beer keg.

“The Great Money Caper” Makes Baby Jesus Cry

“Do you remember when you lost your passion for this work?” – Lisa Simpson This one continues Season 12’s depressing insistence on nonsense plots and radical twist endings at the expense of, you know, humor or a story.  Once again the emphasis is directed more at faithfully reproducing a pop culture concept rather than at satirizing it.  In this case they’re trying to send up “con artist” movies like The Sting (which is mentioned in the commentary), but the episode ends up consisting of little more than plot twists followed by explanations and exposition. Now, I don’t recommend anyone watching…

The Simpsons Do Not Make People Smoke (Duh)

“Just ask this scientician.” – Troy McClure There was a brief media explosion a couple of weeks ago over a study out of Australia that purports to show a link between watching The Simpsons and taking up cigarette smoking.  It’s a terrific piece of media bait, it’s got name recognition and it seems newsworthy.  However, the survey is flimsy, even to an untrained eye. Basically what they did was take this list of instances of smoking on the show and then rate them as “positive”, “negative” or “neutral”: Just over a third of instances of smoking (275; 35%) reflected smoking…

“But what do you do if somebody wants a non-alcoholic beer?” – Lisa Simpson “You know, it’s never come up.” – Apu Nahasapeemapetilon

Coincidentally, My House Is Made From Wood

“Don’t kid yourself Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he’d eat you and everyone you care about!” – Troy McClure Earlier today the season 12 episode “Lisa the Tree Hugger” was on, and since I was out of beer and dinner wouldn’t be ready for 30 minutes, I decided to watch it. I remember watching this episode when it first came on; I don’t remember when that was or what it was about other than Lisa taking up a cause in an non-hilarious way. For those of you who haven’t seen it and hopefully won’t watch it, it…
