I never noticed the symbolism behind this scene before. That’s The Simpsons for you: they keep on giving.
What’s the symbolism?
The rich and powerful taking advantage of the employee who’s doing all the work?
I don’t think this scene has any symbolism whatsoever. Burns just treats Smithers like shit (as always), and it just shows us how mean and cruel he is.
The idle rich riding (quite literally in this case, which I like) on the back of the too reverent and excessively hard working lower classes. Can’t believe I never noticed before.
The one in which they’re riding in the park, Smithers is stung by a bee (which he’s allergic to), but still rides himself to the hospital though close to death – upon which Mr Burns is the one treated by an elitist health care system – also works well.
Now it would be a “Let’s help the rich entitled man who can actually afford to pay his hospital bill!” Joke.
Yes indeedee. Might be some homophobic stuff against old Smithers in there too. Dunno.
Meh, Smithers isn’t lower class though. He has a pretty high profile job and does these things for Burns because he loves him. There’s no symbolism imo…
He is a lower class than Burns, though. Symbolism isn’t meant to be obvious. But that’s ok. Disagree away.
