“By 1964, experts say man will have established twelve colonies on the moon, ideal for family vacations. Once there, you’ll weigh only a small percentage of what you weigh on Earth. Slow down tubby, you’re not on the moon yet.” – “The Moon of Earth” Narrator

The Simpsons Do Not Make People Smoke (Duh)
“Just ask this scientician.” – Troy McClure There was a brief media explosion a couple of weeks ago over a study out of Australia that purports to show a link between watching The Simpsons and taking up cigarette smoking. It’s a terrific piece of media bait, it’s got name recognition and it seems newsworthy. However, the survey is flimsy, even to an untrained eye. Basically what they did was take this list of instances of smoking on the show and then rate them as “positive”, “negative” or “neutral”: Just over a third of instances of smoking (275; 35%) reflected smoking…
Quote of the Day
“Man, you go through life, you try to be nice to people, you struggle to resist the urge to punch ‘em in the face, and for what? For some pimply little puke to treat you like dirt unless you’re on a team. Well I’m better than dirt, I-well, most kinds of dirt. Not that fancy store bought dirt, that stuff’s loaded with nutrients. I, I can’t compete with that stuff.” – Moe
Crazy Noises: Hurricane Neddy
“Past instances in which I professed to like you were fraudulent.” – Homer Simpson In an attempt to fill the summer with love, hate and pointless Simpsons commentary we at the Dead Homer Society are going to spend some time overthinking Season 8. Why Season 8? Because Season 8 is when The Simpsons really began to deteriorate into Zombie Simpsons. That’s why. Because we’re cutting edge and ultra-modern we’re using a newfangled, information-superhighway fad called a “chatroom” to conduct our conversation. This text has been edited for clarity and spelling (especially on “Skittle-brau”). Today’s episode is 808, “Hurricane Neddy“. Charlie Sweatpants:…
Zombie Simpsons and Zombie Doris
“I can feel death’s clammy hand on my shoulder! Wait, that’s my hand.” – Abe “Grandpa” Simpson This list is a pretty impressive display of Simpsons trivia. It’s real deaths of real people that changed the way The Simpsons went. Doris Grau and Phil Hartman I knew about, but the other four were news to me. Go read the whole thing, it’s quite good. This deserves special notice as a further illustration of how horrifyingly soulless Zombie Simpsons truly is: Doris Grau died from lung cancer (who could have guessed?) on December 30, 1995, a scant eight days before the…

Saturday Morning Cartoons
As part of my ongoing efforts to indoctrinate the youth into the ways of proper Simpsons watching I put “Kamp Krusty” on for two of my nephews this morning. They got out of school on Thursday. While watching it, I noticed the date/day combination the calendar. That’s how June fell in 1992 (when it was first broadcast). 2009 is the first time it’s matched up since 1998. Nothing about this is relevant, profound or in any way important, but you just read it and you can’t unread it. Now go watch Simpsons.

Friday Link Dump – Bare Assed Edition
“I’ll never wiggle my bare butt in public again.” – Homer Simpson “I’d like to believe that this time, I really would.” – Lisa Simpson“ There are fewer links than usual this week. Is it because schools are letting out for the summer and people are going on vacation? I have no idea. We did get one case of excellent usage though, plus some pointless nudity. Memorable moon men – Notable celebrity moonings, including Mel Gibson in Braveheart and Bart to the Australians. No mention of Dr. Cheeks, Richard Nixon or Homer’s cheeky impression of Mr. Burns. New showrunners walk the…

Being Careful About What You Wish For
“We’re back, baby!” – Bender Futurama is coming back. The news broke a couple of days ago, and plenty of different outlets used the same hook. Our beloved SimpsonsChannel: Good news, everyone! Collider.com reports today that an inside source tells them that another season of Futurama may be coming soon to Comedy Central. The Nintendians at N-Philes: Good News, Everyone! Futurama To Make A Return Even The New York Times couldn’t resist. Though, being the Times, they had to give it some preparatory context: In the immortal words of Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Good news, everyone! The animated science-fiction comedy “Futurama,”…
